It is a tradition ripe for satire, as evidenced in “Keeping Up with the Steins.” The movie follows Benjamin Fiedler (Daryl Sabara) as he prepares for his big day. Growing up in the nouveau riche confines of Los Angeles, he must cope with his showbiz-agent father (Jeremy Piven) intent on transforming the event into an exercise of over-the-top extravagance.
If only director Scott Marshall had kept his sights on the satire. “Keeping Up with the Steins” remains engaging throughout, but loses its footing once it opts for the sappy melodramatics of Benjamin’s dad and his estranged father, Irwin (Garry Marshall). Oy vey.
