The local sports scene is offering plenty of alternatives to all of the folks going through recent NBA withdrawals.
There’s probably nothing on the slate fully capable of replacing the level of excitement the Hornets generated, but area fans don’t have to sit around at home and mope.
Baseball enthusiasts, who always have the RedHawks to fall back on, were treated to some exciting action over the weekend at the 2007 Big 12 Baseball Tournament. And OKC will keep its championship theme going this week when the Women’s Softball World Series cranks out its typical record crowds at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
Evidently, the Big 12 Conference has been impressed with what it’s witnessed and experienced here. And why not? Both the men and women’s conference basketball tournaments established new attendance records back in March when the events came to town for the first time ever.
As its reward, the league announced May 24 that the Big 12 hoops championships will return to OKC in 2009.
OKC must be doing something right. It’s up to the fans to continue to get out in support of all the events being offered up here in their own backyard. Soon enough, there will another major-league franchise ready to get in on the lovefest. “Jay C. Upchurch
