An intentionally buried 1957 Plymouth Belvedere was unearthed at noon today in Tulsa, following the blast of an airhorn.
A blue crane pulled the car from the lawn of the Tulsa County Courthouse. The vehicle was covered in a reddish-brown fabric and whisked away on a flatbed Chevy pickup for an official unveiling at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
Its tailfins ” rusted solid ” poked through the fabric as it was towed away.
The Belvedere was buried in 1957 to commemorate Oklahoma’s 50 years of statehood. At the time, Tulsans were asked to guess the city’s population in 2007, with their entries sealed inside the car. Whoever is closest ” or their heir ” wins the newly freed car. “Ben Fenwick and Rod Lott
