Disappointment can be the most defining element in sports

For Daniel Agnew, disappointment came last September. Just three days prior to his scheduled departure for Switzerland ” where he was slated to compete in the 2006 Triathlon World Championships ” Agnew got a call from his sponsors letting him know that due to financial issues, they had decided not to help fund his trip.

Without the backing of his sponsors, Agnew could not afford the expensive overseas journey.

“I had trained hard, had my bags packed and I was excited about going,” the 20-year-old Agnew said. “It was pretty disappointing at the time, but there was nothing I could really do about it.”

Well, that’s not entirely true.

What Agnew did was go out and focus more intently on his training over the ensuing nine months. That has allowed him to turn that particular disappointment into a motivating factor, and he’s been on a mission to again qualify for the Triathlon World Championships this fall.

“I saw a lot of potential in Daniel, and I could see he was only going to get stronger and stronger if that’s what he wanted to do,” said his coach, Chris Hunt. “But the qualities that really made me want to work with Daniel are just his values and the type of person he is. He’s fun to be around and he’s so full of positive energy.”

He has secured sponsorships from Bicycle Alley and The Runner to ease some of his financial burden, but would like to find another sponsor to help with his overall travel expenses.
