Still mourning the loss of “Mystery Science Theater 3000″? Well, it’s back “ sort of “ with the debut of “The Film Crew: Hollywood After Dark,” the first in a planned series of DVDs featuring “MST3K” alum providing hilarious commentary tracks to some truly terrible movies.
Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett comprise The Film Crew, hanging out in a garage-type set awaiting their movie assignment from boss Bob Honcho. Their inaugural task? The deservedly forgotten 1968 stripper exploitation flick “Hollywood After Dark,” starring Oklahoma native Rue McClanahan as one of several clothes-peelers at a sleazy Tinseltown club frequented by sweaty guys.
The Film Crew dubs “Bozo-haired” McClanahan as “even less sexy than she was in ‘The Golden Girls,'” and it’s true! Though this turgid melodrama is a real yawner, The Film Crew makes it laugh-out-loud funny, summing up the would-be crime flick as “like ‘Heat,’ except stupid and it has stripping.”
Our hosts take lunch breaks to allow for interstitial sketches, so basically, it’s just like “MST3K,” only minus the robots. As with that show, they pale compared to the main feature, but watching them reminds you how much these guys are missed as weekly fixtures, and how “on” they still are.
