Donut Theatre adapts literary classics for kids

New to Oklahoma City, The Donut Kids Theatre is a professional adult company that performs crowd-pleasing productions of classic children’s stories for kids and families alike.

The Donut debuts “The Emperor’s New Clothes” Tuesday at the Family Theatre Warehouse, 907 W. Britton.

To connect with the audience, The Donut uses classic literature that everyone is familiar with and adds a twist of humor, adventure and wit to the already successful property.

“We don’t want to stray too far from the original, but we try to modernize it just a little,” said Mark Morris, the company’s director. “Mostly what we find is that if you tell a really good story and you tell it well, people will enjoy it.”

The Donut strives to prove that with last month’s production of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” this week’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes” and next month’s “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

“‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ is a really fast-paced, really fun show, and we’re adding some audience participation,” Morris said. “It’s always a crowd favorite, and it has definitely stood the test of time.”

The Donut also will perform the play on Nov. 15, 27, 29 and Dec. 1. Showtimes are at 10 and 11 a.m.; tickets are $5.50. For more information, visit their site or call 848-7469.
