Ultimate Force

2007

I like my action movies big and dumb like the next guy, but what I don’t like is my action movies big and dumb and boring. “Ultimate Force” trips over its own booted feet and stumbles into this latter category.

Premiering on DVD, the film marks the debut of Mirko Cro-Cop Filipovic. “Say what?” you say. He’s a Pride and UFC fighter, so don’t feel bad if you don’t know who he is. My guess is you won’ t be seeing him in any more movies, anyway. Arnold Schwarzenegger, he ain’t. Heck, Don “The Dragon” Wilson, he ain’t.

Filipovic stars as an assassin who finds himself trapped on an island where he has to face off “” to the death, of course “” against an array of other similarly large-muscled opponents. In other words, it’s almost like a Pride or UFC match.

I’m guessing if watching ultimate fighting on TV is your thing, “Ultimate Force” may be your cup of sweat. The film tries to play to Filipovic’s strengths (fighting) while avoiding his weaknesses (dialogue), but it is betrayed by its ultra-low budget, giving it a cheap look, which appears even worse following a flashy opening-credits sequence.
