Downtown’s holiday ice rink now open for business

Now in its sixth year, the 62-by-150-foot Braum’s Ice Rink lets kids and families experience the seasonal thrill of outdoor ice skating, no matter what the temperature. The rink sits atop the lawn of the Civic Center Music Hall, 201 N. Walker.

According to Kim Searls, marketing director of Downtown OKC Inc., more than 26,000 people of all ages are expected to brave the ice this year. The rink is open from noon to 10 p.m. daily, now through Jan. 1, 2008, including Christmas Day.

The cost for a two-hour skating rental and session is $8, or $5 for those who bring their own blades.

There’s more going on than just watching people skate in circles, too. Family entertainment is scheduled, including live ice sculptures created by Ken Burkemper from 6-9 p.m. on all Thursdays in December. And, Fridays, from 6-10 p.m., serve as “Disco Friday Night.” (Last week even brought a visit from Alvin and the Chipmunks, promoting their new movie.)

Because it’s Braum’s, ice cream, food and drinks are sold on site. And for those who don’t wish to brave the cold, log on to log on to and enjoy a “SkateCam” feed of all the rink action, with face-plants and other pratfalls streaming live to your desktop.
