Unwrap a giant Bricktown Christmas rock show with Shawnee’s Shiny Toy Guns

Although it’s illegal to bring weapons on an airplane, the in-your-face foursome Shiny Toy Guns has taken over the cockpit with its debut album, “We Are Pilots.” Next stop: Oklahoma City.

The post-punk, alternative quartet will make its metro landing 7:30 p.m.  tonight at the Bricktown Ballroom with Chicago-based Madina Lake and local act Hush Hush, Commotion.

While their music can take listeners anywhere they want to travel, it has brought the band’s cofounders back to the state they call home. Dawson and guitarist/vocalist Chad Petree grew up together, making music and causing trouble in Shawnee.

When Dawson and Petree decided to get serious about their music, the guys packed up their bags and moved from their 30,000-person hometown to the 3-million-strong Los Angeles, where many fellow residents are aspiring musicians and artists, as well.

In 2002, the two determined musicians created Shiny Toy Guns and set out to find the missing pieces. After recruiting singer Carah Faye Charnow and drummer Mikey Martin, Shiny Toy Guns was ready to hit the airwaves, but the quartet knew it was going to take more than a catchy name and dual-gender dynamics to get their guns noticed.

The answer: technology. The Guns created a MySpace page before the social networking site even had special music pages for bands and performers,  and then branched out to other online outlets such as PureVolume, Facebook, and iSOUND. Before long, word had spread and music lovers around the world were rocking out to “Le Disko” and “You Are the One.” ““ Lauren Parajohn
