Opening Night welcomes new year with kids’ activities

Kids cramping your party style, parents? Worry not! You still can celebrate New Year’s Eve and take the young ones along, as Opening Night 2008 has lots of family activities planned.

Produced by the Arts Council of Oklahoma City, the annual celebration will take place 7 p.m. to midnight Monday, through downtown and Bricktown.

Inside Leadership Square, Sonic is sponsoring a children’s area, complete with hands-on games and activities, including:
” streamers,
” origami,
” a multicultural matching game and
” a large-scale, interactive Lite-Brite.

Performers slated to appear in the children’s area include:
” puppeteer Steve Smith,
” members of the Oklahoma Children’s Acting Guild and
” the Rhythmic Freestyle Dancetwirl dance troupe.

On the streets beyond, there’s more to keep kids busy, with magic, clowns, face painting and a roaming dance group and marching band to keep revelers on their tapping toes.

The Cox Convention Center at 1 Myriad Gardens will play host to a scavenger hunt, with clues leading to various venues scattered about the Opening Night grounds. Prizes can be obtained at the finish line in Kerr Park at 11 p.m.

And that leaves just enough time for the 11:30 p.m. finale in the park, culminating in a fireworks show to welcome the new year.

Admission wristbands are $8 in advance or $10 at the door, but children under 5 are free. For more information, call 270-4848 or visit the site.
