Will Rogers Says

University of Oklahoma Press/Quaid Publishing

We all know that Will Rogers never met a man he didn’t like, but what was his stance on chitlins and turnip greens? The answer can be found in “Will Rogers Says “¦ ,” a new edition of a gift book edited by Reba Collins, director emeritus of the Will Rogers Memorial and Research Center.

For this slim volume (under 100 pages, when it’s all said and done), Collins and her staff chose from among 2,000 of their favorite Rogers quotes, culled from his columns, telegrams, articles, radio broadcasts and other sources.

Many fall into the “wit and witticism” category of humor for which Rogers remains famous. Others are more serious and straightforward, but no less quotable. A majority of the material is aimed at our country’s politicians; one could argue his homespun barbs hold as much sting today: “We shouldn’t elect a president; we should elect a magician.”

Although supplemented with vintage photos of the entertainer, the book is rather simplistic in design, but Rogers completists aren’t likely to care about that.
