Big Read’ seeking book lovers for discussion

As part of “The Big Read,” a nationwide program that encourages literary reading among adults, the Pioneer Library System will host “Trends in Contemporary Chicano/a Literature with Armando Celayo” ” part of the program’s local lecture series ” at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Nancy Mergler Library of the University of Oklahoma Honors College in David L. Boren Hall, 1300 Asp on the OU campus in Norman.

The focus of the program is Rudolfo Anaya’s coming-of-age narrative, “Bless Me, Ultima.” Set in New Mexico following World War II, the 1972 novel follows the journey of a young boy and his relationship with an elderly curandera, or natural healer.

Gary Kramer, public information officer of the Pioneer Library System, said the lectures have offered irreplaceable insight from world-wise student scholars.

“The lectures are highly intellectual, in-depth discussions that have featured students from around the world,” Kramer said.

Tuesday’s lecture features World Literature Today staff member Celayo as the keynote speaker. Adults who attend any of “The Big Read” events are eligible to enter a drawing for a 2005 Nissan Altima from Bob Moore Nissan of Norman.
