Star Trek: The Key Collection

One of next summer’s multiplex tent poles is director J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the “Star Trek” franchise. While I’ve never been a fan of the TV shows or the movies, the Gold Key Comics of my youth are another story, and “Star Trek: The Key Collection” rounds up the first eight issues in a satisfyingly hefty 225-plus pages.

Part of these stories’ charm is in their simplicity. While the dialogue balloons are often dense with words, the art takes on an assembled-via-Colorforms look as Kirk, Spock and the rest of the U.S.S. Enterprise crew visit undiscovered planets; converse with alien life-forms; zap tentacled, Triffid-like creatures; and basically save intergalactic civilization “” life as we know it “” over and over again, 25 pages at a time. Beam it up, old-school comics readers.
