Luckily, an Academy Award, multiplatinum sales success and a reality TV series haven’t wiped any discernible grime off Three 6 Mafia or “Last 2 Walk,” its latest release.
The album swells from the signature grit invented and perfected by the group, well-known for sinister synthesizers and lyrical growl.
“Trap Boom” is explosive, as is “On Sum Chrome,” a street anthem with interjecting lyrical guest delivery from UGK and layers of bullet-fire drums and terrifically explicit verses.
The bonus track “Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body),” which features appearances by Project Pat, Young D and Superpower is an obvious catchy club sensation and strikes an appealing balance only heard in recent Three 6 Mafia releases.
The always annoying Akon is heard throughout “That’s Right,” which is almost as disappointing as “Hood Star” performed with Lyfe Jennings, both low points on the CD, but are easily filled in by 20 other banging songs.
