OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies

Critics were quick to compare this French spy spoof to “Austin Powers,” but really, this international man of mirth has his comedic ancestors in Inspector Clouseau and Frank Drebin, from “The Pink Panther” and “The Naked Gun” franchises. “OSS 117″ has the potential to spawn a long-running series of its own (indeed, the first sequel is now filming).

Jean Dujardin stars as Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath, aka OSS 117, a slicked-hair James Bond-esque secret agent who’s nowhere near as cool and suave as he thinks he is. Never winking at the audience, Dujardin remains totally committed to the character, and exudes a go-for-broke Steve Coogan vibe.

After his friend and fellow agent is killed (flashbacks of their homoerotic beach romps make for a great running gag), Hubert is sent to investigate at a poultry farm (lending itself to another great running gag, involving the light switch) and becomes cozy with more than one woman, including the prim, proper, button-cute Larmina (B
