The sports biopic is the grilled-cheese sandwich and tomato soup of movie genres. You know exactly what to expect, which is part of the appeal. “The Express,” which tells the true-life story of the first African-American winner of college football’s Heisman Trophy, plays it strictly by the book “ but even that predictability can be somewhat satisfying. Rob Brown portrays Ernie Davis, who led Syracuse University to football glories in the early Sixties. Recruited by crusty coach Ben Schwartzwalder (Dennis Quaid), the running back had the unenviable task of following in the footsteps of legendary Jim Brown, who had graduated from Syracuse to the Cleveland Browns.
