OCCC kicks off swim-lesson season

Summer’s almost here, and who doesn’t love spending an afternoon at the pool? Get the kids ready at a six-week swim lesson course starting Saturday at Oklahoma City Community College, 7777 S. May.

The “Saturday Learn to Swim” sessions teach swimming skills, floating, breathing, diving and water safety for children 18 months and up. The college offers seven classes based on age and skill level, including parent/toddler, preschool, beginner, advanced beginner, intermediate, advanced and adult.

“We have a class for all levels, basically,” said Cordell Jordan, college spokesman. “One of the main things that’s great about the aquatics center is that it’s an indoor facility, so no matter the weather, they’ll be able to take classes. The goal of Oklahoma City Community College has already been to offer opportunities for the community, and this is one example of that.”

Classes are under the supervision and direction of trained lifeguards, Jordan said.

“We have a pretty rigorous lifeguard training program,” he said. “We have certified lifeguards that have gone through rigorous Red Cross and our own training program, so they’re very professional.”

Enrollment is $25 for the six 40-minute courses. Classes continue each Saturday through May 9 at the college’s aquatic center. For more information, call 682-7860.
