Kids don’t have to wait until Halloween to dress like a pirate, because International Talk Like a Pirate Day is right around the corner.

Hidden treasure, eye patches and pirate ships are just some of the sights and sounds awaiting them at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Norman Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1309 W. Boyd. A spaghetti lunch will be served.

Nationally, Talk Like a Pirate Day began with a couple of friends, Cap’n Slappy and Ol’ Chumbucket, authors of “The Pirate Life: Unleashing Your Inner Buccaneer,” and became widely known and celebrated in 2002. Although the day has been an annual occurrence since, this will be the inaugural year for Norman, said event coordinator Ed Kearns. The idea stemmed from a child’s birthday party that boasted a treasure-hunt theme.

“It’s just going to be a fun, silly, inexpensive afternoon out for the whole family,” Kearns said.

Kids will be given a list of hints to help them find the hidden booty somewhere on the church’s grounds. Characters in pirate costumes will also make an appearance on a ship dubbed “Pinkalicious.”

Tickets are $5, which includes the hunt and lunch. For more information, call 226-9712 or visit http://www.talklikeapirate.com. “Ta’Chelle Jones
