To tell the story of the rise of Norwegian black metal, filmmakers Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell sift through accusations of self-mutilation, violence, arson, suicide, murder and Satanism. Satanism is the only member of that list that is refuted in the myriad of interviews with the innovators of the genre; the rest of the list is celebrated.

The documentary picks up in the late ’80, primarily following two men: Varg “Count Grishnackh” Vikernes of Mayhem and Gylve “Fenriz” Nagell of Darkthrone. The bulk of the film’s interviews come from these two, because Vikernes and Nagell did much of the heavy lifting in “inventing” black metal: Nagell with the sound, and Vikernes with the attitude and actions.
