Paseo’s 10th annual Fairy Ball, a free event full of magic and music for children and their families, takes place Saturday as an ode to summer nights.
Designed this year by the local nonprofit arts organization Theatre Upon a StarDanceSwan, the ball will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. just west of Paseo Grill, 2909 Paseo.
UPDATE: Organizers have announced that the Fairy Ball has been postponed until Saturday, September 24.
Children and parents are encouraged to make their own costumes, such as bugs, elves, fairies and other magical characters from an enchanted garden to wear to the event, which will feature fairy dancers from StarDanceSwan and original music by Steve McLinn at dusk.
More than 500 people attended the ball last year, according to Lorrie Keller, director of StarDanceSwan, which ran out of its 300 chairs. She said the all-ages event gives kids a loving environment with their families.
“The fairy ball is … at its heart, a time when children can make-believe, tell their own stories and move creatively inside an environment that is all about nurturing their authenticity,” Keller said. “We didn’t know whether we’d see fairies at the ball, and sure enough, they always appear from all directions … in all kinds of colors and fashions.”
In conjunction with the Fairy Ball, Paseo Art Space will host the opening of an art show with Stacy Lopez’s fairy photography from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday. The show will remain on display through August.
