Pete Rose was banned from baseball for gambling on the game.
Suffice it to say, the national pastime and gambling haven’t made for the most harmonious of bedfellows.
So imagine our surprise when the Oklahoma City RedHawks announced on April 4 that its ballpark would bear the name of a casino. For an undisclosed sum, the Chickasaw Nation purchased naming rights to the Bricktown ballpark, slapping on the name of Newcastle Field at Bricktown in honor of its gaming center in the rustic hamlet of Newcastle.
Nothing says baseball, of course, like a celebration of gambling — the very phenomenon that has come close to killing the sport several times. We guess it’s a good thing no steroid manufacturers made a bid.
We wondered what could be next: Airports named after people who died in airplane crashes?
But then it all turned out to be a bad dream.
a wave of negative reaction, the RedHawks and Chickasaw Nation
announced the very next day that the newer new name would be the
Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Looks like the Chickasaw Nation and the RedHawks ultimately know how to play ball when it comes to outraged baseball fans.
