Realizing that’s been done before, writer/director Padraig Reynolds shrewdly introduces a second storyline in the form of a $2 million kidnapping scheme concocted by a white-trash trio on a wealthy family.
For these two storylines to converge takes about 50 minutes, and just before they do, Rites delivers a welcome twist.
Well, it would be a twist if one word in the crew portion of the opening credits didn’t give it all away. So, please, for the love of God, just for those precious seconds, lose your ability to read. While the film is never quite as tense as it’d like to be, its harsh blend of darker crime genres make it well worth the minimal running time invested. —Rod Lott
