The metro offers several new choices for the season, including whites, rosés and bubbles.
Chateau Marjosse Bordeaux is a light, approachable blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, the two primary white grapes of France’s Bordeaux region. Made by the Lurton family since 1650, the Marjosse wines are associated with high quality and affordability.
Perfect for springtime sipping, the white blend is a pleasant marriage of lemon, grapefruit and lime. It’s available at The Wine Gallery, 12000 S. Western, and Edmond Wine Shop, 1520 S. Boulevard in Edmond.
Another Old World option is Cleto Chiarli Rosé, a Lambrusco from Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. Most people under 40 won’t recognize the name Lambrusco, but the sweet reds were a popular choice for decades in America … but most of it low-quality.
Cleto Chiarli’s, however, represents the highest-quality Lambrusco.
The rosé is a lightly effervescent blend with a pleasant flavor of strawberry and raspberry, and a crisp, dry finish. For a slightly heftier, drier Lambrusco, try Cleto Chiarli’s Vecchio Modena. Byron’s Liquor Warehouse, 2322 N. Broadway, has a good Cleto Chiarli selection.
A new line from New Zealand may change the way you think about Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. The Ned Sauvignon Blanc is from the Marlborough region, but without the all-grapefruit characteristics usually associated with the area. This is
more complex, with far more fruit, good acid and a juicy finish.
The Ned Pinot Gris is remarkably fruity without losing its great structure. Its most unique feature is the mix of fruit flavors: tangerine, pear, apple and citrus zest. The Neds are available at Broadway Wine Merchants, 824 N. Broadway, and Edmond Wine Shop.
Offerings from Oregon-based A to Z Wineworks have been available locally for a while, but the new vintage raises the quality level beyond any of its previous bottles. The A to Z Riesling boasts enough sweetness for fans of sweet wine, but with a drier, more food-friendly structure.
For an amazing change of pace, try the A to Z Rosé. Made from 100 percent Sangiovese grapes, it is a tangy, fruity refresher with enough body to handle food.
Available at The Wine Gallery and Edmond Wine Shop, the A to Z line is perfect for a patio brunch.
