The linebacker with all-American good looks flexes his muscle in ballads and anthems alike, demonstrating a solid versatility over the course of the EP’s five tracks.
Opener “Can’t Forget About You” is built around a standard pop-country hook, anchored by a rock earnestness and Adams’ rich, powerful voice. “Miss Me Whiskey” is a more interesting offering, finding the foreground between radio country and thoughtful folk-pop (especially in the delightful outro) and recalling John Mayer on more than a moment or two.
“Shut Up and Kiss Me” sounds exactly like what the title implies, a plucky but predictable piece just self-aware enough to work. “This Cowboy’s Gonna Ride” is similarly straightforward, but again, solid enough. With a playful cadence, “My My My” stands out and finds Adams closest to finding his own identity in the scope of Nashville’s scene.
While not offering anything wholly original, the disc is a consistent package of crowd-pleasers — one that should help Adams make the jump from role player to playmaker in subsequent efforts.
