BLOG: Council votes down bike ordinance

A proposed bike ordinance that had drawn criticism from the cycling community was voted down by the Oklahoma City council Tuesday.

Ward 8 Councilman Pat Ryan had proposed an ordinance to require cyclists to ride to the far right of lanes and force cyclists to give three-feet of space to cars when coming from behind. Ryan had later removed the riding to the far right requirement, but continued to promote the rest of the ordinance because he said motorists needed to be protected from cyclists coming up from behind.

Ryan, Larry McAtee and John Pettis were the only councilors to vote in favor of the ordinance. The rest of the council and mayor voted against the ordinance.
