Chicken-Fried News: Happy hoopsiversary

Golden State Warriors player Kevin Durant’s decision to leave Oklahoma City occupied a lot of space in die-hard Thunder fans’ minds over the last month, which might explain why few remembered to celebrate the event that brought the team here in the first place.

Where were the balloons and cake July 18? Were we still so punch-drunk from KD’s announcement that we missed the 10-year anniversary of the sale of the Basketball Club of Seattle to Clay Bennett and Professional Basketball Club LLC in Oklahoma City?

Surely the anniversary most Oklahomans are waiting for is July 2, 2018, 10 years after the team announced it was moving to the Sooner State, changing the green, gold and white of the Seattle SuperSonics into the orange, yellow and blue of the OKC Thunder.

Or maybe city officials will pop the cork on some champagne Nov. 2, 2018, a decade after the Thunder’s first home win — an 88-85 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

We at Chicken-Fried News personally hope to begin celebrating in June 2017, when Russell Westbrook will lead Thunder to its first NBA championship. Hey, we might as well try being optimistic, right?
