Friday, ongoing

If Susan Cromer Yback’s new exhibit of angel artwork seems, well, familiar, there’s a good reason: The collage works utilize pieces from recent Oklahoma Gazette issues.

“The Gazette always has so many different images in it, so there’s a lot of fun stuff to work with, and it’s current,” said Cromer Yback. “It has bright colors. Everything is so crisp and clear. Even the advertising is fun to work with.

Sometimes I turn the Gazette upside down, just to look at things a different way.”

Although the heavenly art she creates is more than just halos, angels are the theme for her exhibit currently showing through February at 50 Penn Place Art Gallery, 1900 Northwest Expressway. The opening reception is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Rendered in collage and watercolor, 16 pieces comprise collage and watercolor angels. She’s painted quite a few over the past year, due to her day job teaching art at an elementary school.

“I get to know a lot of children, and I’ve been inspired by a lot of them for a lot of these works. Some of them are students who come into the art room and help all the time, and a couple of them are children who died a tragic death,” said Cromer Yback. “Some are friends and family members; some are political statements. I take things out of the Gazette and incorporate that into my work, and you have to look really closely sometimes to find another message. If you don’t look closely, you’ll miss it. It’s a nice way to express myself.”
