Sooner Theatre produces 'Aladdin Jr.' with young actors

Courtney Silva January 26th, 2011

From “Beauty and the Beast” to “The Little Mermaid,” numerous Disney classics have been adapted for the stage, and now it’s Sooner Theatre’s turn.

After 12 weeks of rehearsals, the youngsters of the Norman venue’s junior production class are ready to transport theatergoers to “A Whole New World” in their staging of Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” Starting Friday, the production features young actors, all of them ages 8 to 12, who were ecstatic to be performing in a show they were familiar with, said Jennifer Baker, executive director.

“When we announced what the show was going to be, they were all so excited,” Baker said. “Even some of the older students were a little jealous.”

All of the principal roles are double-cast, meaning two students share the same part, but at different show times — a process Baker believes is important.

“Double-casting allows students so many more opportunities,” she said.

“Giving everyone a chance is something we try to do as much as possible.”

Although “Aladdin Jr.” is for all ages, Baker hopes it’s the performers who enjoy it the most.

“It’s been incredible to see these kids grow and develop throughout the weeks,” she said. “They are learning teamwork and all of the hard work that goes into putting on a show like this.”

The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m.

Sunday at Sooner Theatre, 101 E. Main. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 12 and under. For more information, call 321-9600 or visit soonertheatre.com. —Courtney Silva
