OU President David L. Boren released the following statement this afternoon about the former Enid High School star: “The university family is deeply saddened by the tragic death of student-athlete Austin Box. Our hearts go out to his family and friends."

Athletics Director Joe Castiglione released the following statement: “Austin Box will be greatly missed by his many friends and teammates in the Athletics Department and all across campus. Grief counseling is being made available to members of the team and his close friends.”

Oklahoma Gazette contributing writer Luke Atkinson attended high school with Box.

“Stunned to hear about Austin Box,” Atkinson wrote on Facebook. “He was a great friend and teammate in high school. He and the other Enid players helped me transition into the new school and new program with ease. I'm going to miss my quarterback.”

Coach Bob Stoops is overseas, but he and members of the coaching staff have been in touch with the family.

The family of Austin Box asked Mercy Health Center to release this statement on their behalf:

"The Box family wishes to express their appreciation for the outpouring of sympathy from across the state. We particularly want to thank the University of Oklahoma, the coaching staff and players for their kindness and support.

Austin loved everything about Oklahoma – the people, his hometown of Enid and his many close friends. Most of all, Austin loved his family and we loved him.

We invite you to join us in celebrating his life."
