Lookin' pretty in the city

Jenny Coon Peterson May 25th, 2011

My makeup is what you’d call minimal. And that’s being generous. The only products I am religious about applying are moisturizer, mascara and eyebrow powder.

(Trust me, if you had dark brown hair, but curiously blond eyelashes and eyebrows, you’d be BFFs with mascara and your eyebrow brush, too.)

I know: I’m young. I should be experimenting with fun, bright makeup! Instead, my look is more Night Nurse at the Old Folks Home.

But you lovely readers aren’t boring like me. So this one’s for you.

At Trichology Salon (14101 N. May; 302-6499), people can not only get a cut and color, but now a little color for their face, too. Trichology is the exclusive Oklahoma home to Becca, an Australian makeup company.

From a counter in front of a glam, lightbulb-framed mirror — very “getting ready backstage on Broadway” — it carries all of Becca’s core items. Salon makeup artists can do a makeup application for events, or if you’re just looking for a new look.

Most popular right now is the Shimmering Skin Perfector in opal, which is a highlighter for giving skin a healthy glow, and beach tints, a lip and cheek cream tint.

Don’t leave without checking out the mascara, which I was told is poised to take off. It’s a tubal mascara, which means it grabs on to each lash and separates lashes without clumping.

Just a few doors down, Ten14 Boutique (14201 N. May; 755-0356) is the exclusive retailer of makeup artist Lilly Stone’s Sooo Lilly. (Yup, those two extra “o”s are supposed to be there.)

Sooo Lilly is a full line of makeup and skin-care products (check out the lotions, toners and scrubs), plus accessories like brushes, tweezers, eyelash curlers and more. The line is also exhaustive, with lots of bright, summery colors — especially in the eye shadows and lipsticks.

Like Trichology, Sooo Lilly is sold from a bright corner of Ten14, where people can not only buy all their makeup, but also receive applications.

Finally, The MakeUp Bar (7646 N. Western; 810-1226), focuses — obviously — on all things for the face and body. Now 10 years old, it has a large selection of makeup and skincare lines from heavy-hitters like Nars, Kiehl’s and B. Kamins Chemist.

The store also does applications for events and makeup lessons, which are very hands-on and teach us makeup rejects more about skin-care, plus develop a day and night “look.”

New for summer, head there for the brights popping up for the hot months. Nars has a coral lipstick, while Tarte has a coral cream blusher called Tipsy.

And, this is really cool: The store carries a makeup sponge called the Beauty Blender, an egg-shaped sponge that can be cleaned and reused for up to three months.
