Oklahoma City’s Northpark Mall is getting a new addition: Starbound Productions Academy for Performing Arts. The full-service academy, which has by-audition enrollment, opens its doors Aug. 1 to students of all ages and levels.

Cindy St. Peter, creator and education director at Starbound, said the studio is looking for people with raw talent, as well as those wanting to hone their performance skills. Acting, singing and dance classes form the heart of its curriculum.

St. Peter, who has worked for 40 years as an actress, singer, vocal and piano instructor and music director, came up with the idea for Starbound after noticing a need for more performing arts education in OKC.

“We’re so excited,” she said of the debut. “We expect a lot out of these performers, because [this] is going to propel them into really working hard for themselves.”

To that end, Starbound instructors will be on the lookout for opportunities for their students, such as commercial filming, local theater productions or special events featuring dancers and vocalists.

St. Peter recalled previous students who would often send nervous or excited texts prior to auditioning.

“My favorite thing is getting people ready for auditions,” she said.

Starbound Productions will host The Singsations, a show choir for children ages 7 to 17. The group will take part in several competitions throughout the year, as well as perform at local venues every eight weeks.

Because of the demanding performance routines and high prerequisite skill level, separate auditions are required to join Singsations, which will take place Aug. 1-11. All those auditioning will be asked to sing a Broadway or pop song of his or her choosing. Pre-registration is required; call 205-6766.

Camp Glee will be offered beginning Monday and through July 13, and again July 23-27. The camps are for children and young adults who want to brush up on their vocal skills prior to auditioning for a Starbound class or The Singsations.

In addition to the core classes, the studio offers Monday-to-Saturday Zumba classes, private instrumental lessons, pageant coaching and Mommy & Me singing groups for women and their toddlers or preschoolers.

On Saturdays, Starbound gives parents the chance to “Drop and Shop.” From 2 to 9 p.m., parents can check their kids into Starbound for a day of fun creative activities while the grown-ups can run errands or check out a movie in the mall.
