Speak English!

Gazette staff March 20th, 2013

For all of you perturbed by the dizzying number of languages you might encounter these days, fear not! Language-loving lawmakers have your back.

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Tulsa, feels your pain. (Or is it xenophobia?) Under his proposed English Language Unity Act, the federal government would be required to conduct all its affairs in English.

“This will obligate the federal government to preserve, protect, and enhance the role of the English language within our government,” said Inhofe.

The measure’s House author is Iowa Republican Steve King, which, we suppose, makes this bill all about King’s English.

Never mind that English is already the United States’ de facto language. Uh-oh! What’s Inhofe’s policy on foreign language phrases like "de facto" in an American publication?
