Borders luring young readers with Spidey, Shrek

If radioactive costumed heroes and obese green ogres can get kids into movie theaters, maybe they can get kids into books, as well.

That's the hope, anyway, as Borders at 3209 Northwest Expressway hosts "Storytime Goes to the Movies" 2 p.m. Saturday.

According to Borders bookseller George Niestempski, this Borders location holds "storytime" sessions for children on a weekly basis, but this one will feature book titles starring silver-screen idols Spider-Man and Shrek, to tie in with the summer blockbusters "Spider-Man 3" and "Shrek the Third."

AGENDA
Niestempski said the store hopes the characters' widespread familiarity with kids will bring in more attendees, and perhaps get them hooked on reading.

"We hope so, anyway," he said. "That's our ultimate goal: to get more readers out there."

At storytime, a Borders employee reads at least two books to the assembled children, although Niestempski said the number can go higher, depending on the number of kids present. The session lasts anywhere from between 15 minutes to half an hour.

"And we usually serve lemonade or punch with some cookies," he added.
