Various artists - Juno: Music from the Motion Picture

None February 21st, 2008

f='http://www.okgazette.com/bestofokc' target='_blank'>best (if not the best) movies in 2007. Combining songs by bands and artists you know with obscure performers and ones you might not expect to be revived on a soundtrack, the album is super-fun and easy to enjoy.

With classics like "A Well Respected Man" by The Kinks or "I'm Sticking With You" by The Velvet Underground mixed with Scottish poppers Belle & Sebastian and Sonic Youth, the album is a low-key, mostly acoustic affair. Even Buddy Holly makes an unexpected appearance with "Dearest."

Most of the signature folksy "Juno" tracks come courtesy Kimya Dawson, the female voice in the now-defunct Moldy Peaches (which are also on the soundtrack). Her funny little songs barely fit with the music or rhythm of the lone acoustic guitar backing her up, but manage to be likable and endearing. The movie's two leads, Michael Cera and Ellen Page, perform the duet "Anyone Else but You," on the CD. And, shockingly, it's pretty good.

Pick up the "Juno" soundtrack along with the eventual DVD.
