Various artists — Never Give Up: Celebrating 10 Years of The Postal Service

Few indie bands have had the impact on current music that The Postal Service has. Even fewer have done so with only one album.

Big Worm — Bench All-Stars

Fans of the comedy classic Friday may recognize the name Big Worm, but the Big Worm behind Bench All-Stars is rooted not in South Central L.A., but on the streets of Oklahoma City.

Code 22 — Going Soft: The Acoustic Album!

The guys of Oklahoma City’s Code 22 seem like a likable group of fellas. Their latest release, Going Soft: The Acoustic Album!, is likable enough as well — so likable that on first listen, I took its clean, acoustic sound and clear, unstressed vocals as an alternative praise-and-worship band.

Eureeka — Polysynthetic Fields

It’s always refreshing to hear music that embraces its own eccentricity, yet presents it in an accessible and meek fashion. Eureeka — the Norman-based duo of Jordan Vargas and Devin Wahl — has tapped into this rarified air on its self-released EP, Polysynthetic Fields.

Tom Skinner — Tom Skinner

Sincerity is nearly dead in songwriting. The image of the earnest singer with eyes tightly shut and a crack in his voice as he plunges to emotional depths has become a joke.

Music

Hugh Foley
Editor’s note: With Saturday marking Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday, we asked music scholar Hugh Foley for his take on why Guthrie still matters. A professor at Rogers State University in Claremore, Foley is the author of the Oklahoma Music Guide II and a founding board member of the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

The (off)beat goes on

OKC offers many music venues off the beaten path.

Music

Phil Bacharach
Randy Cassimus has spent years cranking out rock ’n’ roll in bars and clubs throughout Oklahoma City. He’s used to playing over the clink of beer glasses and shouts of liquored-up patrons when he plays with local band The Hi-Def Howlers. So he wasn’t quite sure what to expect when he booked an acoustic gig at a bookstore.

So Sheik

Although not religious leaders, The Sheiks could inspire legions of followers with their alt-rock riches.

Music

Joshua Boydston
Admittedly, the origin of The Sheiks’ name might be a tad uncouth, but the moniker suits the local alt-rockers pretty well.

Music Made Me: Cami Stinson

Local jazz vocalist Cami Stinson reveals the five albums that helped polish her pipes.

Patsy Cline, 12 Greatest Hits (1988)

I listened to this tape so many times in my Walkman, I actually ruined it. I was about 6 or 7, and didn’t realize I’d spend my entire life trying to create a similar buttery warmth and womanly tone. Her heart spills through, and nothing sounds contrived or put-on. My first time performing with a live band was when I sang “Leavin’ on Your Mind” on the Oklahoma Opry. I was 9, and I sounded ridiculous because I was trying to make myself sound just like Patsy. I even had my Mom make me an exact replica of Patsy’s outfit.
