Another Earth

This intriguing sci-fi drama goes slightly out of orbit.

Sci-Fi

Phil Bacharach
You’ve got to admire the DIY ethic of “Another Earth.” Raw and grainy, it is steadfastly committed to its own smarts and vision — even if it ultimately falls short of its ambitions.

No Blade of Grass

If Al Gore made an apocalyptic action film ...

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Actor-turned-director Cornel Wilde (“The Naked Prey”) was way ahead of his time, as his 1970 eco-thriller “No Blade of Grass,” now out from Warner Archive, shows.

Attack the Block

You gotta fight / For your right / To watch this!

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
A festival hit, "Attack the Block" lives up to its reputation as an instant cult classic. After all, it's basically a stoner's version of 1986's "Critters" (or 1991's "Critters 3," to be technical) — so how could it not hold enduring appeal to the baked couch potatoes ingesting cheese puffs?

7 Faces of Dr. Lao

A heady piece of fantastic fantasy.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
In a true tour-de-force performance, the late, great Tony Randall takes on seven roles in this long-beloved, charming 1964 fantasy from legendary sci-fi producer George Pal. After a too-long period of being out of print, it's back from Warner Archive.

Green Lantern

That's one dull emerald.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Is "Green Lantern" as bad as everyone said? Resoundingly yes! To paraphrase the emerald knight's own oath: In brightest day, in blackest night, sitting through this took all my might.

The Lost Future

It should be ‘Lost’ forever.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Sean Bean's at the center of a critically acclaimed, made-for-television effort that has him and his crew using many an antiquating weapon, from swords to bows.

Mimic: The Director's Cut

Take two!

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Guillermo del Toro is a giant talent, but he has an equally giant problem in getting too close to his films, to a point where he's unable to see any of their faults; thus, they often overstay their welcome. ("Hellboy II: The Golden Army" was among 2008's most tiresome movies, but length was hardly that one's only problem.)

The 10th Victim

'10th' is first-rate, far-out fun.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Leave it to Italy to take the core idea of a great Robert Sheckley short story ("The Prize of Peril") and run with it. The result, "The 10th Victim," is as prescient as it is kitschy, and something of a cult classic. Blue Underground's sweet new Blu-ray of the very 1965 tongue-in-cheek thriller may expand that following.

Master of the World

Propeller in the rear, party in the front!

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
As a huge Vincent Price fan, I’ve literally been waiting more than a decade for 1961’s “Master of the World” to hit DVD. At one time, it was slated to be released under MGM’s “Midnite Movies” line — I remember reading in a magazine that screenwriter Richard Matheson either completed interviews or commentary for it — before the studio abandoned that umbrella.

51

More like a 2.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
What if — in an unprecedented move of honest and transparency — the federal government allowed a few reporters to tour Hangar 18 of Area 51? Answer: Syfy would make a terrible movie about it.

Metropolis

Fritz’s finest, complete at last!

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” may be second only to George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” in the number of crappy, budget DVD releases in which the classic film is available, thanks to being in the public domain. Not a single one of those unauthorized discs present the movie in any reputable audio and visual format.

Witchville

Boil, toil, not worth the trouble.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
As with last year’s “Necromentia,” director Pearry Reginald Teo has in “Witchville” a film that looks better than its rather weak story deserves. It was made for Syfy, which I didn’t realize until its logo appeared opened the credits, and I audibly groaned, fearing the worst.

Trollhunter

The troll movie without a popcorn sex scene.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
Vampires can be felled by garlic. Werewolves, by silver. Frankenstein's monster, by fire. Trolls, by, um ... well ... hmm.

Red Faction: Origins

Some sigh-fi from Syfy.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
In the extras, Robert Patrick, one of the stars of “Red Faction: Origins” calls the made-for-Syfy film "a wonderful family story."

Donnie Darko: 10th Anniversary Edition

The modern cult classic is all growed up!

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
It’s official: “Donnie Darko” is now a decade old.
