Broadchurch: The Complete First Season

Kneel at this great mystery.

Television series

Rod Lott
Welcome to the coastal resort of Broadchurch, population … oh, who can keep track, what will all the corpses? Yes, Broadchurch is yet another British television procedural involving the search for a murderer in a quaint little town, just like the limited series The Fall and Top of the Lake.

Switched on

TV gets weird.

Television series

Rod Lott
Not everything on television has to appeal to mass audiences. In fact, with the further fractioning of viewership thanks to alternatives like Netflix and VOD, more series can afford to become more niche. Here are five examples of shows both past and present — and new to DVD and/or Blu-ray — that encompass some of the more outrageous ideas ever to go beyond boardroom discussion.

Bad behavior

Why is watching bad guys so damned good?

Television series

Rod Lott
We vilify people for bad behavior in real life, yet celebrate it in our entertainment, particularly on the small screen. When the results are as strong as the current crop, all new (or new-ish) to DVD and/or Blu-ray, why question the disconnect?

The Spirit

Who was that masked man?

Television series

Rod Lott

ABC's attempt at turning Will Eisner's iconic comic The Spirit into a TV series in 1987 may not have passed the pilot stage, but it sure beats Frank Miller's misbegotten $60 million feature-film treatment of 2008. If you missed the one-hour episode the first time around — and most of us did, which is why the series ended as it soon as it started — Warner Archive comes to the rescue.

The Secret of Crickley Hall

Trick or treat? Totally a treat.

Television series

Rod Lott

What is The Secret of Crickley Hall? Well, if I told you, it wouldn't be a secret. The less juvenile answer: It's a superb BBC limited series that'll plunk you in the proper Halloween spirit.

Femme Fatales: The Complete Second Season

Refractory period over; ready to go again?

Television series

Rod Lott
Certainly the favorite TV show of pubescent boys nationwide whose parents have no idea what airs on Cinemax after they go to bed, Femme Fatales is an anthology series that puts women on top, both figuratively and literally. The better sex engages in better sex, all while pulling the wool — surgically enhanced and otherwise — over the eyes of stupid men.

It’s another summer TV-on-DVD roundup!

Declare your independence from the heat with these recent recommendations!

Television series

Rod Lott
Not to mention the rest of the summer, but the Fourth of July in particular gives you a great excuse to catch up on television shows you may have missed the first time around. We’ve got seven suggestions new to Blu-ray and/or DVD to keep you and your remote cool, so let's get started! In alphabetical order ...

Dexter: The Seventh Season

A cut below the previous.

Television series

Rod Lott
There's no way to discuss the seventh and penultimate season of Showtime's hit Dexter without acknowledging how the previous year ended. Therefore, if you haven't finished the sixth season, stop reading now. You've got work to do.

The Bletchley Circle

A code well worth cracking.

Television series

Rod Lott
Nearly a decade after World War II ends, four British women who performed a valuable (albeit hush-hush) service breaking codes for their country find themselves restless and feeling useless in the era’s expected roles of barefoot-and-pregnant subservience.

Childrens Hospital: The Complete Fourth Season

Rx: lotsa laughter.

Television series

Rod Lott
Fresh off its Emmy win in the short-format live-action category, Adult Swim’s 11-minute marvel known as Childrens Hospital returns for a fourth go-round.

The Aquabats! Super Show! Season One! 2012

Ritalin! Not! Necessary! But! It! Won't! Hurt!

Television series

Rod Lott
For those Ritalin-chompin’ children who find Nickelodeon’s Yo Gabba Gabba! too slow-paced, The Hub’s The Aquabats! Super Show! should satiate them. After all, its title has double the exclamation points.

Flash Gordon: The Complete Series

Can he still save every one of us?

Television series

Rod Lott
Until Warehouse 13 and Haven came along, Syfy’s idea of an original series was a largely frightening prospect, and for good reason. I’d been led to believe that its short-lived Flash Gordon update (2007-08), carrying bad buzz before it aired, was one of those train wrecks.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXVI

The short review: Buy it already.

Television series

Rod Lott
I think the best way to review a box set of Mystery Science Theater 3000 would be to list all the references made by and/or targets of the Satellite of Love crew in those episodes, to demonstrate their true depth and breadth.

But that’d also be the worst, because we’d be here all day.

Enlightened: The Complete First Season

But is it any good? Dern tootin’!

Television series

Rod Lott
Earlier this week, HBO announced the cancellation of Enlightened, which just completed its second season. It’s a damn shame, because in her four-decade career as an actress, Laura Dern never has been better.

Eastbound & Down: The Complete Third Season

Major-league laughs at bat.

Television series

Rod Lott
On the basis of Eastbound & Down’s first two seasons, if Kenny Powers were a real person, I’d advise readers to lock up their daughters. After watching the third season, I’d add infants and toddlers to that list.
