Archie's Weird Mysteries: The Complete Series / Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century: The Complete Series

Hey, kids!

Television series

Rod Lott
Being a child of the 1970s, there's an entire generation's worth of cartoons I missed out on, and they all seem to come from the same studio: DIC Entertainment. By the time DIC came to prominence with Inspector Gadget in 1983, I was too old, and Saturday mornings were better spent on sleep.

Police Woman: Season Two

Starring sigh Angie Dickinson in various revealing outfits.

Television series

Rod Lott
Angie Dickinson broke ground by starring as Sgt. Pepper Anderson in “Police Woman,” as it was the first hour drama fronted by a woman to become a hit.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation — Grave Danger

Whooooo are you? Quentin Tarantino.

Television series

Rod Lott
In inversion relation to his relationship with film, Quentin Tarantino's track record in television has been less than stellar.

30 Rock: Season 5

Still TV’s snappiest half-hour.

Television series

Rod Lott
Since moving homes roughly a year ago, my whole life got thrown for a loop. One notable, although not Earth-shattering bit of fallout was not being able to watch “30 Rock” every week. My schedule forced me to wait for the DVD set.

Whitechapel: The Ripper Returns

A ripping good British crime series.

Television series

Rod Lott
London authorities’ golden boy Joe Chandler inherits a whopper of an investigation in his new position as DI (that stands for “Detective Inspector,” you Yanks): a young woman’s murder whose details appear to mirror those of one of Jack the Ripper’s victims in his infamous 1880s spree.

Modern Family: The Complete Second Season / The League: The Complete Season Two

One’s a monster hit. The other deserves to be.

Television series

Rod Lott
Two recent second-season Blu-ray releases of Fox's TV comedy hits are a show that everyone I know watches and an even better show that nobody I know watches. They are, respectively, "Modern Family" and "The League," and couldn't be more different.

Justified: The Complete Second Season

The praise and prizes for this crime series are fully ‘Justified.’

Television series

Rod Lott
Season three of “Justified,” which kicked off last night, has some mighty big boots to fill. The 13 episodes of the second season prove that, and if you didn’t see them, grab the triple-disc DVD set pronto.

Delocated! Seasons 1 & 2

What’s behind the mask? It’s no ‘Venture Bros.,’ that’s for sure.

Television series

Rod Lott
As the years go by, I’m convinced Adult Swim will put just about anything on the air. Once home to some genuinely inventive programming, the late-night, big-people-only block on Cartoon Network increasingly airs shows that seem as if they required the haze of marijuana to be funny.

Luther: Season Two

Arresting TV, in more ways than one.

Television series

Rod Lott
For its second season, BBC's Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated "Luther" was reduced from six episodes to four, but nothing else has been sacrificed. It remains stunningly good television.

Mildred Pierce

Joan Crawford, you've been pwned.

Television series

Rod Lott
How does a director go from shooting a Barbie-dolls biography of doomed vocalist Karen Carpenter to a prestige miniseries starring perhaps the greatest screen actress of her generation?

Portlandia: Season One / The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret: Series One

Put a bird on it!

Television series

Rod Lott
IFC airs two comedies clearly too hip for the room ... which is why they’re on IFC, of course. Now that the first seasons of “Portlandia” and “The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret” have hit DVD, those of us without the cable channel can see if we’ve been missing anything.

Bedlam: Season One

Has nothing to do with football, everything to do with ghosts.

Television series

Rod Lott
Bedlam Heights has an occupancy problem. Seems so few people wish to rent an apartment in a building that was once an insane asylum. Fewer when they learn the place is haunted by the ghosts of its former residents.

Look: Season 1

Watch Big Brother watching you.

Television series

Rod Lott
Showtime's series of "Look" is basically just an extension of Adam Rifkin's 2007 film of the same name, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXII

It’s ‘Time’ for another eight hours of deep-hurting hilarity.

Television series

Rod Lott
Another quarter, another “Mystery Science Theater 3000” release from Shout! Factory. While hell on the wallet, fervent fans of the series know each set is worth every penny and then some.

Downtown Abbey

Before season two starts, get hooked now.

Television series

Jenny Coon Peterson
Confession: I watched all seven episodes of “Downton Abbey” on DVD over the course of two days. Instead of reflecting on what that says about my laziness, let’s focus on what that says about this near-perfect British miniseries.
