Loving our guns to death

Commentary

Robin Meyers
The Oklahoma response to the latest mass shooting will be utterly predictable. Gun rights in this state are like an official religion with a canned liturgy: “If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Guns don’t kill people; people kill people.”

The land of Bibles and bigots

Commentary

Robin Meyers

Pulling up behind an enormous red pickup truck a few weeks before the election, I couldn’t help but notice a huge portrait of President Obama that covered most of the tailgate, and just beneath this unflattering image, in big block letters, was this question: “Does this ass make my truck look big?” Coming closer, I saw that the driver was a Marine, and these were his sentiments about his commander in chief.

An embarrassment of a senator

Commentary

Robin Meyers
Is it any wonder that Oklahoma students rank near the bottom of the country in math and science scores? Consider U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, who teaches them by example that if someone pays you enough money, you too can ignore the evidence and act like a fool.

Holding our biased breath

Commentary

Robin Meyers
Let’s be perfectly honest: When it comes to Chesapeake’s troubles, nobody in Oklahoma City can be expected to be objective. We all have been on the receiving end of too many benefits, from Classen Curve to Whole Foods to the arena’s namesake, not to mention some of the best Christmas lights in the known universe.

Open carry is an embarrassment

Commentary

Robin Meyers
For over a decade I wrote a regular column for this page, a second opinion on the dominant political and theological ethos of my beloved Oklahoma — where I was born, have raised three children, and continue to lead the same amazing church.

Dead wrong and proud of it

Commentary

Robin Meyers
The world wept for joy; Oklahoma spat defiantly. The glory train of history pulled out of the station; Oklahoma waved goodbye and said "good riddance." Dr. King's dream came true; Oklahoma slumbered o...

Good night, mudslingers

Commentary

Robin Meyers
If the definition of political leadership in Oklahoma means doing things the same old crude, shallow, sickening way, then James Inhofe should get the Nobel Prize for Pathetic. His television ads again...

Welcome to corporate socialism

Commentary

Robin Meyers
I never thought I would agree with Tom Coburn or Jim Inhofe on anything, but this is a bailout, not a rescue. It should come as no surprise that the same crowd that rushed us to war over nonexistent w...

A tale of two conventions

I went to the Democratic National Convention in Denver because I could not help myself. As a lifelong and long-suffering Democrat, I wanted to be present for the making of American history. I heard lo...

Counterpoint: Save the Supreme Court

Commentary

Robin Meyers
One of the biggest scandals of the current Bush administration was what it tried to do to the U.S. Department of Justice. In order to destroy its political opponents, only right-wing Republicans got i...

Point: The myth of the marketplace

Commentary

Robin Meyers
It is difficult to imagine being a supporter of Sen. John McCain with an economy like this. The defining difference between Democrats and Republicans is that the latter believes that the marketplace c...

Point: Support the troops: Barack Obama

Commentary

Robin Meyers
Sen. Barack Obama represents the best hope we have of ending the disastrous war in Iraq. One can argue that in addition to his charisma, it was his public opposition to the war before it started that ...

Much ado about nothing

The politics of race

Commentary

Robin Meyers
Sometimes the painful truth about the human condition comes in through the back door, or seeps into the national psyche like water into a basement. We can't see where it comes from, but the results ar...
