Songs of the South

Year three of the Oklahoma Film & Music Office’s Buffalo Lounge at the South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas, built on past successes by adding space and a slew of new bands to its proceedings.

SXSW 2013: Bowlsey / Desi and Cody / Brave

A triple treat of tuneage.

Music

Stephen Carradini
After an unusually easy commute and parking job, I settled into a chill afternoon at The Buffalo Lounge with Bowlsey, Desi and Cody, and Brave.

SXSW 2013: Guardant / The Del Toros / The Kamals / Josh Sallee

Just Joshin'. And you?

Music

Stephen Carradini
It only took Guardant 30 seconds to win me completely over to its team. The quintet’s hyperactive, quirky dance pop is simply irresistible.

SXSW 2013: Paperscissor

The Buffalo Lounge rocks out to a great start.

Music

Stephen Carradini
Getting to Austin for South by Southwest is always an adventure, so I’m happy to report that the only damage I incurred on my way to The Buffalo Lounge was an unexpected oil change.

SXSW 2013: Tallows

When experimental rock’s Tallows takes the stage, don’t fret.

Music

Stephen Carradini
Fret-tapping is an alternate way of playing guitar that creates very percussive rhythms out of melodic sounds. Instead of strumming each note, the guitar player taps a finger from the fretting hand against each note on the fretboard. The mesmerizing rapid hand movements are a neat side benefit.

SXSW 2013: Horse Thief / Colourmusic

Horse Thief takes the reins, while Colourmusic paints music to be felt.

Music

Stephen Carradini
Horse Thief’s act of draping an Oklahoma flag over one of its amp stands may have just been a proud statement of local love, but it is also a reflection of its wide-open, rootsy, rock ’n’ roll sound. The band describes itself as a “psychedelic folk rock band,” and that description isn’t bad, either.

Buffalo roams

And rocks! For the third year in a row, The Buffalo Lounge will showcase Oklahoma musicians at the South by Southwest festival.

Music

Stephen Carradini
In less than a week, a small army of Oklahomans will invade Texas with the intent of taking over one of its storied events. The revolution will not be televised (what is these days?), but it will get loud: For the third consecutive year, the Oklahoma Film & Music Office will bring The Buffalo Lounge to Austin’s South by Southwest (SXSW), Monday through Wednesday, March 13.

David lean

To deliver his sparse songs, David Ramirez needs only a guitar, his voice and a place to play — preferably not at a hotel for dogs.

‘Curse’ words

A local amateur game designer debuts a retro-style game for Xbox Live.

Features

Stephen Carradini
Every kid who has played a Nintendo gaming system knows about that part in that level where you have to make the character jump from single block to single block across lava/water/space/ nothingness. That section is universally reviled, due to the amount of time sunk into dying over and over.

Radio daze

Don’t touch that dial! Because it may be a thing of the past, as more local ventures go online to keep your ears entertained.

Music

Stephen Carradini
There’s never a shortage of articles claiming that old X media will disappear because of new Y media: newspaper/radio, radio/TV, newspaper/Internet — same story, different verse.
