Fracking: Good or bad? Is it that easy?

Fracking is the injection of huge amounts of water, sand and chemicals into oil and natural gas-producing rock formations far below the surface. Horizontal drilling is the opposite of vertical in that the drill pipe bends at some point “down hole” and, thus, can penetrate multiple producing “plays.”

Our legislators are home this summer, having completed their 2013 work. It was a session that saw good bills killed, bad bills consuming too much precious time and the passage of a ridiculous tax cut that doesn’t even kick in until 2016.

With the exception of that most beloved Republican activity — the buying, selling, exchanging, concealing, cleaning, carrying, showing, stroking and shooting of guns — members of the party once led by Lincoln are now best known for their genetically driven obsession: cutting taxes anytime, anywhere, any size, for any reason or excuse.

In reference to the article by C.G. Niebank III about problem gambling in Oklahoma (”Losing bet,” March 13, Oklahoma Gazette), it is true that more money is needed to deal with this issue. As the story indicated, only $750,000 is earmarked to help those addicted to gaming at Oklahoma’s 117 casinos, four racetracks and dozens of bingo parlors.
