Saturday February 09
[Artspace] at Untitled, 1 NE 3rd Street, Oklahoma City, is pleased to present the exhibition, Reflections: The Photographs of Allison V. Smith and Stanley Marcus from January 25 through March 30 with an opening reception for Allison V. Smith January 25, 5-8pm.

Allison V. Smith is the granddaughter of the legendary merchandiser Stanley Marcus. As a passionate amateur photographer, Marcus mentored Smith who has today become a recognized photojournalist and magazine photographer living and working out of Dallas. Marcus, former President of the well-known luxury brand Neiman Marcus, discreetly made photographs during his international travels for the company. In the late 1990’s he gifted his granddaughter with 5,000 slides of his personal photographs. Allison recognized the monumentality of such a gift and with her mother Jerrie Marcus Smith, subsequently created and published the book, Reflection of a Man: The Photographs of Stanley Marcus. This exhibition containing 64 prints will be the first in which both artists’ photographs have been shown together.

From 1950's Parisian life to high-society parties and family gatherings, Marcus’ photographs comprise an exquisite representation of decades past as well as an intimate look into the fashion industry of mid-century America. As a professional photographer, Smith typically uses a Hasselblad camera that produces a signature square format. Her intriguing images of people and places from Marfa to Maine have a distinctly solitary and quietly beautiful appearance. Although her photographs are different from her grandfather's – his were made primarily with a 35mm camera – there is an elegant and refined quality in images by each of them that emphasizes the simple beauty and dignity of everyday life stretching from one generation to the next.
