Dreams

8 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday March 11
Norman artists Carolyn Faseler, Corazon Watkins and Betty Wood will present a collaborative exhibit of works exploring “Dreams” in the Depot Gallery, 200 South Jones Ave., Norman.  A reception for the artists will be held in conjunction with the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art on March 8, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.  The exhibit will run from March 5 through April 28.  Admission is free.

The artists will make a presentation at both 7:00 and 8:00 during the opening reception, with a brief talk and question and answer session exploring the topic of “Dreams” and discussing their works interpreting those dreams.

“The subject matter for this body of work resulted from discussions with fellow artists about dream interpretation.” says Betty Wood.  “My dreams are convoluted; that is, bits from the past are interwoven with current activities, and nothing usually makes much sense.... As an artist, my attempt to visually interpret dreams turned out to be extremely difficult.”

Carolyn Faseler agrees.  “When this series was begun, I thought it would be easy to paint my dreams -- but it wasn’t!  Originally, I wanted to paint what I actually saw... But most of the time I couldn’t remember enough details.”  Faseler did remember color though, and when she eliminated realism she said “the work flowed”.

Corazon Watkins based her dream interpretations “on the existing state of my life both physically and mentally, and how my waking life ‘writes the script’ of my dreams.”  The resulting images are “surrealistic in style, using mixed-media, oil, and/or any objects that helped me express the dream more vividly and, hopefully, give some semblance of sense.”

Faseler holds a Master of Arts degree from Fort Hays Kansas State.  Watkins and Woods both earned Master of Fine Arts degrees from the University of Oklahoma, where both have also served as adjunct professors.  All have shown extensively in Oklahoma and beyond, both individually and together.

Depot Gallery hours are 8:00 am to 3:00 pm Tuesday through Friday and 10:00 to noon on Saturday.  Performing Arts Studio gallery exhibitions are made possible in part by a grant from the Oklahoma Arts Council, and by individual donations.  Phone405 307-9320 or visit www.pasnorman.org for additional information.
