Charles Lewton-Brain and Charleen Weidell

Friday May 03

On Friday, April 12, 2013, the Firehouse Art Center is proud to present a Jewelry and Metalsmithing exhibition of internationally known artists Charles Lewton-Brain and Charleen Weidell.  The public is invited to a reception in their honor from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the FAC Gallery at 444 South Flood Avenue.

Master goldsmith Charles Lewton-Brain trained, studied and worked in Germany, Canada and the United States. His work is concerned with process and beauty as well as function. He frequently uses a “printmaking” approach to working metal, in that the work is done in separate steps in groups and layers building towards the finished piece. His work and writing on the results of his technical research have been published internationally. In 1994, Brain Press was established to document and publish the results of his research activities. A prolific author, he published two major books in 2008, Foldforming with Brynmorgen Press, and The Jeweler’s Bench Book with MJSA Press. A distinguished Fellow of the Society of North American Goldsmiths, a member of the Royal Canadian Academy and a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, he has lectured and taught in England, Germany, the United States, Canada and Australia.

Charleen Weidell is a Metalsmith with a passion for creating sensuous metal forms made from flat sheets of silver and copper that are formed through the repeated blows of a hammer. She has an M.F.A. degree in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from San Diego State University where she studied under renowned metal artists Helen Shirk and Arline Fisch. Charleen’s work in metal has been exhibited and collected on the international, national, and local levels. Tart Server, a broad blade silver server, was acquired by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, England and recently published in Contemporary Silver Part II: Recent Commissions, written by collector Seymour Rabinovich. Her latest commissioned work was a Ceremonial Medallion for the University of Central Oklahoma President, Roger Webb.

This exhibition brings together the work of these two renowned artists for an impressive display of innovation and artistry.
