Dido and Aeneas

7:30 p.m., Friday April 26

The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music will present one of the oldest English operas, “Dido and Aeneas,” at 7:30 p.m., April 25 – 27 and 2 p.m., April 28 at Mitchell Hall Theater located on the UCO campus.

“The score selected is old, yet still beautiful both musically and visually and still very accessible to today’s audience,” said Kevin Eckard, D.M.A., director of UCO’s opera division.

Based on Book IV of Virgil’s “Aeneid,” this ensemble opera featuring Central opera students was written by Baroque composer Henry Purcell.  The first-known performance of the opera was in London in 1688.

The story follows Dido, the Queen of Carthage, through her unrequited love for Trojan hero Aeneas.

“Though the old English text has been a challenge for our students, I am very excited with the work the students have done.  It has been an incredible learning and transformative experience for them,” Eckard said.

Tickets are $14 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, Central faculty and staff, and non-UCO students, and $4 for Central students with a Central I.D.  To purchase tickets, call the Mitchell Hall Theater Box Office at 405-974-3375.
