The University of Central Oklahoma Department of Design will open “Revive,” an exhibit featuring custom furniture designs created by Central students, whose objectives were to turn “trash into treasure,” with a reception from 4-6 p.m., April 18 in the Melton Gallery located in the UCO Art and Design Building.

The opening is free and open to the public and will include light refreshments.

Students were asked to explore areas where they might find discarded items, evaluate what was being thrown away and revitalize the items by using them as materials for new furniture.

“In addition to this being an eye-opening challenge for our students, we are equally excited with how this project falls right in line with the university’s mission statement to be a green, environmentally-conscious campus,” said Ruki Ravikumar, M.F.A., chair of the design department.

“The students are reinventing how simple things can be reused and thus enabling a longer lifespan for each individual item.”

This project also promoted collaboration between interior design students and graphic design students.

While the interior design students worked in groups to design and create furniture pieces, which range from chairs and tables to lighting fixtures, graphic design students worked on branding initiatives, both for the individual groups and their furniture.

This design exhibit will be on display through May 9.
