Sunday June 30
Friday, June the 7th Paseo Originals Art Gallery is set to open "Spotlight Color" which will focus on artists' use of color in their works to evoke an emotional response. The opening reception for the exhibit will be held in the feature gallery at Paseo Originals from 6:00 to 10:00 PM during the evening of the First Friday Artwalk on Paseo. "Spotlight Color" will run through Sunday, June 30th. The exhibit will focus on two artists; local encaustic guru Gayle Curry and noted contemporary master oil painter Mary Bechtol. While their work is juxtaposed in style, representational versus abstract, both artists passionately embrace vibrant tones to create push and pull on the observers emotions.
Gayle Curry, who's noted local collections include the Devon Tower and OU Children's Physician Building, is a career artist who has exercised her skill in many media over the years though recent focus has been in encaustic. The aggressive and visceral medium is a paint made from pigment mixed with melted beeswax and resin which after application is fixed by heat. "Color is a significant component; I thrive on the challenge of its subtleties and possibilities, which are limitless in how to articulate a message." Says Curry, "To create tension is also part of my goal in a final work. Tension stirs surface and deep emotion in potential viewers and myself. I strive to combine calm and crazy, light and dark in order to construct an unexpected reaction." The artist is particularly drawn to abstraction and mixed media because of its meditative qualities. The artist notes, "The purpose of my work is to find a way to express a vision without being literal; I explore form, shape and color and work them on a surface until I evoke emotion."

Mary Bechtol is an accomplished artist and prolific painter who works from her home studio on a farm in Canyon, Texas producing large powerful expressions of nature. Bechtol says of her work, "I grew up on the Southern Plains, moving frequently. There isn't much to look at on the Plains, but with each family move I began to notice subtle differences in the landscape. I saw varying shades, hues, and tones, and how the colors changed with the differing light. Most of my landscapes begin en plein air. I give the viewer barely enough information to recognize a location, the greater focus being on the push and pull of color which gives each piece its depth. Since we were always moving, I saw the landscape in motion. Thus I begin each canvas with a sketch usually done in black with large fluid motions to depict how the landscape looked from the back seat of the car as it tumbled past me. These fluid lines depict that movement, and I leave some of these lines visible in the finished painting because they evoke the excitement and adventure I felt as a child."
