This Too

Friday September 20

[Artspace] at Untitled in Oklahoma City is hosting "This Too" by Mark Fox. On display from August 30th until October 26th, the exhibit is open each week from Tuesday through Saturday. Get the chance to meet the artist and mingle with other art lovers at the opening reception on August 30th from 5 to 8pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Mark Fox was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1963. He received a BFA from Washington University, St. Louis in 1985, and an MFA in painting from Stanford University in 1988. Solo exhibitions include The Peacock Flesh, Larissa Goldsten Gallery, New York (2007), Cricket’s Song, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York (2006), and Inchmeal, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, California (2005). His work is in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania. Mark Fox lives and works in New York.

In a recent artist statement, Fox mentioned the traumatic effects of experiencing a tornado during his childhood that left him with a powerful feeling of impermanence and fear of loss. This anxiety must have prompted him a few years ago to catalogue all of his belongings as drawings and to create an installation with them. He has noted, “Such dramatic events cause physical destruction, but they can also destroy internal belief structures, which must be reconstructed/reconsidered. Tornadoes have become emblematic of this process for me.” While tornadoes wield possibly deadly forces, Fox has been able to capture their potential for renewal and innovation in both his animation and sculptural work.
