The University of Central Oklahoma Musical Theatre Division will present Stephan Schwartz’s “Working” at 8 p.m. April 3-6 at the UCO Jazz Lab, 100 E. Fifth Street in Edmond.

Schwartz – the composer of “Wicked,” “Pippin” and “Godspell” – adapted “Working” from the same-titled novel of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Studs Terkel.

The musical explores the typical workday of 26 characters from different walks of life, ranging from a project manager to an ironworker, a housewife to a fireman, and a prostitute to a socialite, among others.

“’Working’ is based on the lives of real people and therefore explores universal emotions and presents them in a way that is relatable to all,” said Steven Smeltzer, Central musical theatre instructor and director of this production.

The musical consists of a mixture of songs and monologues and will feature the talents of 20 Central students.

“Consistent with the range of characters in the play, the songs and monologues range in emotions: some are poignant, some are heartfelt, some are funny,” explained Smeltzer.

The musical compositions for this collage of everyday life was a collaborate effort among numerous renowned musicians, including Grammy Award-winner James Taylor and Tony Award-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda.

“’Working’ celebrates everyday people, fills you with you hope and inspiration and is the perfect musical for anyone who has ever worked a day in their lives,” concluded Smeltzer.
