The Art of the Brick: Permission to Play
Thursday July 03
Visitors will build their creativity this summer as they experience “The Art of the Brick®: Permission to Play”, the new traveling exhibition opening June 1, 2014 at Science Museum Oklahoma. Hosted by the Oklahoma Museum Network funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, “The Art of the Brick” is a 1,400 square-foot exhibit featuring sculptures created out of iconic LEGO® bricks by New York-based artist Nathan Sawaya. This marks the first time this extraordinary traveling exhibit will be publicly displayed in Oklahoma.
Sherry Marshall, Oklahoma Museum Network director, says the award-winning artist has catapulted the iconic LEGO brick into an art medium all its own, transforming this construction toy into awe-inspiring and thought provoking sculptures.
“This exhibition so cleverly combines art and science,” says Marshall. “LEGO bricks have long been a toy that inspire creative play. What Nathan Sawaya does is help children explore their imagination using this toy to discover art, engineering, geometry and architecture in a fun and accessible way.”
“Sawaya broke new ground when he first launched ‘The Art of the Brick’ and it is one of the most popular art exhibits touring the globe,” says Marshall. “Sawaya has shown his awe-inspiring art at all points around the globe. He has brought versions of his exhibition to Brussels, Singapore, Ireland, China, Australia and Taiwan. The Oklahoma Museum Network is honored that our city and our state will be hosting a unique collection of works by Sawaya.”
“I use LEGO bricks as my medium because I enjoy seeing people’s reactions to artwork created from something with which they are familiar. Everyone can relate to it since it is a toy that many children have at home. I want to elevate this simple plaything to a place that it has never been before,” Sawaya says.
“The Art of the Brick: Permission to Play” is on display at Science Museum Oklahoma through September. Admission is included in museum general admission ticket prices. Admission is $12.95 for adults (age 13-64), $10.95 for children (age 3-12) and seniors (Over age 65). For more information, visit www.oklahomamuseumnetwork.org.
